IEC 60840:2020 is available as IEC 60840:2020 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.
IEC 60840:2020 specifies test methods and requirements for power cable systems, cables alone and accessories alone, for fixed installations and for rated voltages above 30 kV (Um = 36 kV) up to and including 150 kV (Um = 170 kV). The requirements apply to single-core cables and to individually screened three-core cables and to their accessories for usual conditions of installation and operation, but not to special cables, such as submarine cables and their accessories, for which modifications to the standard tests or the setup of special test conditions can be necessary. This document does not cover transition joints between cables with extruded insulation and paper insulated cables. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition, published in 2011. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- Gas immersed cable terminations for use at rated voltages above 52 kV are required to be designed, type and routine tested in accordance with IEC 62271-209 in addition to the routine and type tests specified in this document.
- Requirements are introduced for composite outdoor termination insulators.
- The test cylinder diameters specified for the bending test (type and prequalification tests) have been modified in line with IEC TR 61901:2016.
- A low smoke halogen free oversheath material, designated ST12 is introduced.
- Additional tests under fire conditions are introduced: vertical flame spread, smoke density, acidity and conductivity, which shall be applied according to the fire performance declared for the cable.
- A test for water penetration in the conductor is added.
- In addition to tests on the outer protection of joints, type tests on the screen sectionalizing insulation of all accessories have been introduced.
The contents of the corrigendum of February 2021 have been included in this copy.

IEC 60287-1-1:2023 is applicable to the conditions of steady-state operation of cables at all alternating voltages, and direct voltages up to 5 kV, buried directly in the ground, in ducts, troughs or in steel pipes, both with and without partial drying-out of the soil, as well as cables in air. The term "steady state" is intended to mean a continuous constant current (100 % load factor) just sufficient to produce asymptotically the maximum conductor temperature, the surrounding ambient conditions being assumed constant. This document provides formulae for current ratings and losses. The formulae given are essentially literal and designedly leave open the selection of certain important parameters. These can be divided into three groups:
- parameters related to construction of a cable (for example, thermal resistivity of insulating material) for which representative values have been selected based on published work;
- parameters related to the surrounding conditions, which can vary widely, the selection of which depends on the country in which the cables are used or will be used;
- parameters which result from an agreement between manufacturer and user and which involve a margin for security of service (for example, maximum conductor temperature).

IEC 60287-1-3:2023 provides a method for calculating the phase currents and circulating current losses in single-core cables arranged in parallel. The method described in this document can be used for any number of cables per phase in parallel in any physical layout. The phase currents can be calculated for any arrangement of sheath bonding. For the calculation of sheath losses, it is assumed that the sheaths are bonded at both ends. A method for calculating sheath eddy current losses in two circuits in flat formation is given in IEC 60287-1-2.

IEC 60287-2-1:2023 is solely applicable to the conditions of steady-state operation of cables at all alternating voltages, and direct voltages up to 5 kV, buried directly in the ground, in ducts, in troughs or in steel pipes, both with and without partial drying-out of the soil, as well as cables in air. The term "steady state" is intended to mean a continuous constant current (100 % load factor) just sufficient to produce asymptotically the maximum conductor temperature, the surrounding ambient conditions being assumed constant.

IEC 60287-1-2:2023 provides a method for calculating the eddy current losses in the metallic sheaths of single-core cables arranged as a three-phase double circuit in flat formation. The sheaths are bonded at one point or are cross-bonded so that there are no significant sheath circulating currents. Where metallic sheaths are bonded at both ends there are significant circulating currents which result in a lower current-carrying capacity. A method of calculating circulating current losses for double circuits is provided in IEC 60287-1-3.
The method descibed in this document provides coefficients which are applied as corrections to the loss factors for the sheaths of one isolated three-phase circuit. These corrections are negligible for cables where the parameter m is less than approximately 0,1 (m = ω/(Rs · 107)), which corresponds to a sheath longitudinal resistance higher than 314 µΩ/m at 50 Hz.
Consequently, the method is used for most sizes of aluminium-sheathed cables, but is not required for lead-sheathed cables unless they are unusually large.
The coefficients are provided in tabular form and have been computed from fundamental formulae for sheath losses, the evaluation of which calls for expertise in computer programming which will possibly not be readily available in general commercial situations. The development of simplified formulae for some of the tabulated coefficients is under consideration.
Losses for cables in a single circuit is covered in IEC 60287-1-1.

HD 620 applies to cables with extruded insulation and for rated voltages Uo/U(Um) from 3,6/6 (7,2) kV up to 20,8/36(42) kV used in power distribution systems of voltages not exceeding the maximum r.m.s. value of the system voltage Um.
This Part (Part 1) specifies the general requirements applicable to these cables, unless otherwise specified in the particular sections of this HD.
Test methods specified are given EN 60228, EN 60229, EN 60332-1-2, EN 60811, EN 60885-3, HD 605 and HD 632.
Attention should be drawn to the fact that a significant number of sections include references to long term tests which are collected in HD 605.  These long-term tests are considered as necessary and reflect the best available knowledge for the existing cable design.  They are related to specific designs and different philosophies concerning adequate measures against the influence of water.  However, it is the firm intention to reduce this large number of different tests, but more experience should be gained before starting to rationalise this important matter.
The particular types of cables are specified in Parts 9 to 12.
NOTE   Parts 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8  were withdrawn in HD 620 S2.

This EN gives the procedure and rules for extended application of results of tests carried out according to the test methods described in EN 50399, EN 60332 1 2 and EN 61034 2.
The EXAP rules described apply to EN 50399 test results used for classification in classes B2ca, Cca and Dca, additional smoke production classes s1, s2 and s3 and flaming droplets/particles, to EN 60332 1 2 test results used for classification in classes B2ca, Cca, Dca and Eca and to EN 61034 2 test results used for classification in classes s1a and s1b.
No EXAP procedure and rules have been developed in respect of the results of tests carried out
according to the test method described in EN 60754–2. As the parameters (pH and conductivity) for each cable in a family are determined based upon calculation using material test results, this is considered as a matter of direct application. Material test results taken from any one sample of finished cable from a family are sufficient to calculate the parameters for each cable in the family.
Cables of diameter 5,0 mm and less should be tested as bundles according to EN 50399. Bundled cables are not included in the EXAP rules applying to EN 50399 test results.
The rules apply to circular and non-circular cables provided that they fall within the scope of the relevant test method.
A specific EXAP rule has been developed for the most common generic power cable families,  optical fibre cables and copper communication cables (CCC). A general EXAP rule has been developed for any power cable families. The general EXAP rule is not applicable to communication or optical fibre cables.
NOTE 1   Multicore power cables are sometimes referred to as control cables with a rated voltage but for the purposes of this standard are considered as power cables. For multipair, multitriple and multiquad control cables either the general EXAP rule for power cables or the specific EXAP rule for copper communication cables can be applied.
The general EXAP rule may be applied in the case of hybrid cables provided that the conditions of 6.1 are fulfilled.
The use of the specific EXAP rule gives benefit in the lower number of cables to be tested for a range of cable constructions (product family).
An EXAP is only possible when cables belong to a defined family as defined in this standard.

This document specifies requirements for, and constructions and dimensions of, multicore and multipair cables rated voltage U0/U: 300/500 V, of the following types: - unscreened, sheathed for either exposed or protected wiring (0,5 mm2 to 2,5 mm2, number of cores from 2 to 48); - screened, sheathed for either exposed or protected wiring (0,5 mm2 to 2,5 mm2, number of cores from 2 to 8); - unscreened, sheathed for either exposed or protected wiring (0,5 mm2 to 1,5 mm2, number of screened pairs of cores from 2 to 7). - screened, sheathed for either exposed or protected wiring (0,5 mm2 to 1,5 mm2, number of unscreened pairs of cores from 2 to 7). All cables have stranded tinned copper conductors, halogen-free, thin wall thickness insulation and standard wall thickness sheath. Cable types are specified for use in exposed situations (Class E), and for protected situations (Class P). They are for use in railway rolling stock as fixed wiring or wiring where limited flexing in operation is encountered. These cables are rated for occasional thermal stresses causing ageing equivalent to continuous operational life at a temperature of 90 °C. For standard cables this is determined by the acceptance test defined in EN 50305, using accelerated long-term (5 000 h) thermal ageing indicating a 110 °C/20 000 h temperature index. If the customer were to require lifetime predictions this would be demonstrated based on the temperature index of the product as supplied by the manufacturer. The maximum temperature for short circuit conditions is 160 °C based on duration of 5 s. Under fire conditions the cables exhibit special performance characteristics in respect of maximum permissible flame propagation (flame spread) and maximum permissible emission of smoke and toxic gases. These requirements are specified to permit the cables to satisfy Hazard Level 3 of EN 45545 1 and EN 45545 2. EN 50306 4:2020 is expected to be used in conjunction with EN 50306-1:2020, General requirements, EN 50306-2:2020, Single core cables, and EN 50306-3:2020, Single core and multicore cables.

This HD collates and specifies the test methods to be used for testing polymeric insulated and sheathed electric cables, of rated voltage up to and including 20,8/36 kV, intended for public distribution systems, and for use in power generating plants and sub-stations. Test methods in this HD are additional to those already harmonized, e.g. EN 60332-1 series and EN 60811 series, and are used for testing cable types specified in HD 603, HD 604, HD 620, HD 622, HD 626 and HD 627. In each case, these HDs give complementary information needed for the practical application to each specific type. Therefore the present HD as such is not sufficient for carrying out and evaluating the tests on electric cables. Full test conditions (e.g. temperatures, durations) and/or test requirements are not specified in this HD. Such data needed to carry out the tests is given in the particular sections. NOTE The words 'particular section' refer throughout to the section of HD 603 or HD 604, or other HD to which HD 605 applies, in which a particular cable type is specified.

This European Standard describes the method to evaluate the performance of protective systems for electrical cable and busbar systems in order to maintain the circuit integrity under fire conditions to classify the protective system according to EN 13501 3 for the P classification. The test examines the behaviour of cable protection systems exposed to fire from outside. The tests specified in this standard are not aimed for assessing the performance of the fire protective system and the penetration seal for maintaining the requirements of the penetrated wall or ceiling (classification E / I).
This method is very different to EN 50200 for the PH classification and also to IEC 60331-11, IEC 60331-21, IEC 60331-23, and IEC 60331-25, which are not designed for fire protective systems for electrical cable systems.
This standard should be used in conjunction with EN 1363-1.
The test results apply to fire protective systems for electrical cable systems rated for voltages up to 1 kV.
The test procedure should also be used to determine the performance of protective systems for use with data and optical cables, however, verification procedures for such cables are still under development. Proposals are given in Annex C.
The protective system may include ventilation devices, inspection hatches, fixed or removable lids etc.
The tests specified in this standard are not aimed for assessing the performance of sprayed or painted coatings (e.g. intumescent or ablative coating, plastic film, epoxy resin) and similar protective layers (e.g. wrap, bandage) applied directly on the cables or bus bars as fire protective system. Also, cables and bus bars with intrinsic resistance to fire, and without fire protective systems around, are excluded (see CENELEC standard EN 50577).
This test method is not applicable for cabinets for electrical accessory containing bus systems, relays or similar.
The cables identified in this document are for testing only. It is not intended that they shall be used in protective systems installed in buildings.
