This document specifies methods for a) determining the true relative density of coke, crushed to NOTE “True relative density” varies according to the displacement liquid used. b) determining the apparent relative density of coke, i.e. the ratio of the mass of a volume of dry coke to the mass of an equal volume of water; c) calculating the porosity of the coke.

This document specifies procedures for the size analysis of coke by manual and/or low impact mechanical sieving, using square or round holed sieves of aperture sizes between 125 mm and 0,5 mm. Guidance on handling the sampling and sizing of coke products greater than 125 mm is given in Annex A.

ISO 18894:2018 specifies the equipment and techniques used for determining lump-coke (nominal top size >20 mm) reactivity in carbon dioxide gas at elevated temperatures and its strength after reaction in carbon dioxide gas by tumbling in a cylindrical chamber. Main application is the testing of coke to be used in iron making blast furnaces (CRI~ 55). This standard can also be applied to other coke types (e.g. foundry coke), but limited precision is to be expected. Application to coke for non-iron making blast furnaces is beyond the scope of this document.

Two methods of operation are described: where a restricted size analysis is required, using two sieves only; where a complete size analysis is required. A sample of coke is subjected to a prozess of size analysis by a specified procedure, and the results are expressed in terms of the cumulative percentage by mass of the coke remaining on sieves of different sized openings.

For calculating the true relative density the mass of water displaced by a known masss of dry coke, ground to pass a sieve of nominal size of openings 212 um, is determined using a pyknometer. - The volume of a large amount of coke is determined by displacement in water; dividing the mass of the dried coke by the mass of an equal volume of water gives the apparent relative density. - The porosity is calculated from the true relative density and the apparent relative density of the coke.

This Technical Report describes the principal drum tests used to asses the physical strength of coke. These tests involve rotation of the coke in drums of different dimensions for different durations, and lead to the production of different indices. Additionally the available experimental evidence relating the various strength indices has been consulted. Such evidence relates the principal as well as secondary indices. In this Technical report, all available statistical relationships between the principal strength indices have been listed and where possible illustrated graphically.

A sample of coke greater than 20 mm in size and of known size distribution is subjected to mechanical stresses ina rotating drum. The degree of breakdown of the coke is evaluated by a process of sieving and size analysis after 100 drum revolutions (Micum test) and, if desired, after 500 drum revolutions (Irsid test).
